Established in Hove Jonathan Phillip is an award winning unique boutique hair salon offering all aspects of hairdressing and selected beauty treatments by a professional and creative team.

We had the pleasure to work with Jon and the team for their forthcoming marketing campaign for the salon. After the recent re-fit and refurbishment of the salon, it set the perfect background for the staff head shots.

When you arrive at Johnathan Phillip you will be offered a complimentary drink from the bar and there is lots of selection from a gin to a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows.

But this is just one of the many little extra treats you’ll receive at the salon to make you feel at ease. Getting out and meeting other photographers to share their tips and experiences is a great benefit for us self employed peeps as many of us work on our own in our studios or homes. Fortunately I have Bondy here to keep me company and make me tea all day but it can be quite a lonely profession for many of us.

I have always loved being an proactive members of the Master Photographers Association (MPA) and enjoyed the benefits that being a member of the Southern region bought to my business. The seminars, workshops and marketing sharing was invaluable, not to mention the annual print competitions that kept us on our toes.  Sadly in 2012 the MPAs Southern region seized to exist due to a fall in members and the existing members disbursed their membership to the London/Essex or Wessex regions. Since this time, I’ll be honest I hadn’t been making the most of my MPA membership as the travel put me off.

Last week however, I decided it was time to leave the comforts of my Brighton bubble and head down to Southampton for the Wessex annual print competition which was also tied in with the Pete Bristo wedding seminar.

It was an interesting start to the afternoon of what I felt was a rather opinionated Pete telling us a lot about him self which resulted in us running out of time at the end, but the practical was great. As you can see some some of the photos shown here are just my ‘snaps’ but Pete explained in detail about light and posing which us photographers will use going forward to our next wedding! Pete had a great knowledge and understanding of his field of expertise – he is a Fellow MPA photographer after all (that’s an almighty highly qualified grade of photographer by the way!).

The afternoon ended with Pete judging the print competition. I had entered into Wedding Photography, including one civil partnership print, fashion/glamour, children under 5’s, pets and press/PR.
My heart broke as I saw some of my proudest prints fall out by the way side, especially the pet category which I thought was a clear certain, something to do with not being able to see the dogs eyes… must have been all the fur! But each one was given a positive critique on how it could be improved which is great to feed back in to the studio.

All was not lost though as I received two Merit awards!

One for fashion and glamour and the other for under 5’s, yey well done me! See below for the prints I entered…

It would be great to have the Southern MPA region back for any big cheeses that can hear this, but the Wessex visit was well worth it plus Phase Photography has now strengthened it’s ‘Award Winning’ credibility.

Obviously after the wedding seminar and print critique we are now even better photographers, so please do get in touch for your photography needs!

As a member of the Best of Brighton and Hove, I was invited to visit a fantastic networking event hosted at EcoStream Refill centre in Brighton on Thursday.

The evening started at 6.00pm and was bursting with local business owners and entrepreneurs!

The theme for the evening is ‘Buy Local’…

The Brighton founder of Ecostream, Steve Bannatyne talked to a room full about ‘refill’ and some of the statistics on why refilling is set to move from grass roots into the mainstream.

Between bouts of Networking, there was tasting sessions of locally supplied products, a coffee making session, and a tour of the Ecostream store. Finger food and refreshments, I must say the wine went down VERY well!

It was a great opportunity to meet other businesses, exchange cards and ideas, and what I hope will start to build some more relationships locally.

The competition was to select the very best image as taken by the experts at Phase Photographic at BabyExpoUK in Brighton in June. Hundreds of fabulous images were put before the judging panel who had the tough task of whittling them down to 10 finalists – these were then posted on the Phase Photographic Facebook page for the public to cast their vote to determine the final 3!

The prize included a fabulous family photo package courtesy of Phase Photographic worth £650+ and the winning image will be used on the promotional materials and on the website for BabyExpo Brighton 2014.

The 3 finalists were revealed as Tegan from Uckfield (mummy Lisa Alexander) India from Portslade (mummy Emma Bott) and twins (Mummy Carley Ferguson)

The final judge in the process was Rachel Waddilove –  internationally renowned childcare expert and parental advisor, who has worked with families around the world, including high profile clients such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Minnie Driver, and Lord and Lady Mountbatten. Her latest book – ‘Sleep Solutions: Quiet Nights for You and Your Child’, endorsed by Minnie Driver was published this summer.

Rachel had the tough task of choosing the winner from the final 3 and admitted it was a challenge with 3 such strong images but in the end declared the winner as ‘a very clever picture with lovely expression on baby’s faces’. Although the competition was for the ‘Face of BabyExpo’ – organisers are delighted to announce that the winning image for 2013 was actually twins Casey and Keira from Stopting.

‘I am glad I didn’t have to decide as the images were all so beautiful but we are very happy with our winner! It’s a stunning shot, full of character and capturing two very gorgeous little babyexpo visitors! Hats off to Phase Photographic for hosting the busy onsite studio, capturing the day so well and offering such an expert service to the thousands of parents and parents-to-be who came!’

The first thing that your clients need to know when seeking someone to take photographs of their special event is what a Pro Photographer is not.

A Pro Photographer is not

• A person with a new expensive camera
• A friend who knows a bit about photoshop
• Someone who gives away his images
• A person who sells their images for not a lot      of money

OK so we can all agree what a pro photograher is not, but it is equally important that we explain to potential clients why they should employ a Pro Photographer and what they can expect to receive in return for paying your professional fees.

So here are a few bullet points for you to build into your story to potential clients.

A Pro Photographers is:-

• An individual with an Artists eye
• A person who understands image composition
• Skilled in the importance of correct lighting
• Knowledgeable about colour correction
• Knows where to get prints and/or printing to ensure best quality images

What is most important is that your clients dramatically improve their chances of receiving images that not only hold their value and integrity for generations to come but that capture those so precious moments that may never be captured by the person with just an expensive camera.

Last but not least great images are worthless if no one views them with the best products to display your images.

However, had the rain fallen over Plumpton on Sunday for the best event on the Race courses diary, there would have been more high heels stuck in the mud than you can shake a stick at.

Yes that’s right it was Ladies Day at Plumption Races and the sun shone for us all.

Phase Photographic were proud to be judging the Best Dressed lady and awarding 3^rd prize!

One lucky lady won a Hair, makeover and photo shoot for herself and a friend here at the studio, with styling provided my Amanda J – one of Brighton’s best loved makeup artists.

After losing too much money on the horses, my fiancé and I decided it best to invest our money into Champaign, which spurred us into pony betting instead! Well we won £15 at least!

Oklahoma! was the first musical written by the dynamic Rodgers and Hammerstein team and was a smash hit on Broadway in1943. It transferred to the London stage and enjoyed a successful run in 1947. The show was like a breath of spring to Londoners, still suffering from the aftermath of the deprivation and trauma of 5 years of war.

The shoot was photographed surprisingly just down the road in an American themed house in Shoreham. The WLOC team were dressed and ready for action in their cowboy boots, hats and bottles of booze!
